chinch-bug

These pests are often found gathering in open, sunny patches of turf grass. Due to their minute size they are hard to detect and can cause extensive damage when gathered in large infestations. Chinch bugs feed on the stems of certain types of grass, specifically turf grass. This pest is a native to the U.S. and has definitely had an effect on the human population. Chinch Bugs fed largely off of grass until the land was settled in early America. Once crops such as corn, wheat, and other grains were present, the bugs adapted to these crops as a new source of food. Over the past decades chinch bugs have been major agricultural pests as they can destroy entire crops. Today they are most commonly a lawn pest which can be treated if the need arises.
